Here's another of our serious upgrades; a 2006 Honda XR650, which will be appearing in this week's Trials and MX News. Our customer was clearly a fan of the big single cylinder Honda, but he wanted the ultimate upgrade, to provide serious performance improvements on the standard package.

The XR was totally stripped in the Boretech workshop, and the motor rebuilt with a crank rebuild, a Wiseco high comp piston, an HRC camshaft and a Mikuni TM40-6 Flatslide Pumper Carb. The carb upgrade eliminates the legendary XR hard starting problem and along with the hesitations and flat spots. An FMF exhaust system helped maximise the power, and a full Hinson clutch helped to make the most of the extra horses.

The standard XR forks are not as adjustable and are a lot smaller than on a modern motocross bike, so a new steering stem was made in-house to enable the fitting of a complete Honda CRF450 front end. To go one step further Boretech fitted a set of factory A kit Showa forks with billet Honda fork clamps and topped them off with a set Renthal Twinwall handlebars and Racetech Barkbuster Brush Guards. The rear shock was also re-valved and rebuilt to make it more balanced with the improved new front end.

The standard airbox was adapted in-house to allow room for a 12v battery to help run a much brighter and more efficient lighting kit, which includes indicators and front and rear brake lights.

The frame was stripped, shot-blasted and polished in-house and a higher than standard seat foam and large capacity fuel tank fitted. Plastics are UFO with a Polisport headlight and all the decals were custom made in-house to the owner's design and spec.

Finally, Talon wheels were fitted with wavy discs and enduro moose inners front and rear in Dunlop enduro tyres.
